The Akatsuki Cat Clan is where the strongest and bravest cats tend to end up. Founded by Deidara, who was a member of the Tribe of Shadow Flames at the time, their beginnings were bathed in blood and shadowed by betrayal.
Deidara was the closest friend of MoonShadow, than Leader of the Tribe of Shadow Flames. In secret, he banded together with a few other TribeMates and several Rogues and Loners to create the Akatsuki Cat Clan. He felt that the Tribe was growing weak, and he disagreed with decision made several centuries prior to stop using the Shadow Flames, a special power only able to be controlled by cats of the Tribe. He suggested to MoonShadow that she train at least the Elite Warriors, the Shadow Stalkers, to use the power. When she refused there was an argument, and Deidara left to create his own Clan. He returned roughly a moon later, claiming to apologize, but it was a ruse. He had gotten in touch with a couple old friends and some other cats. The beginnings of the Akatsuki Cat Clan formed to the NorthEast of the Tribe.
Deidara, and a few other Tribe Cats, lived double lives for several moons, until Deidara lead a suprise attack on the Tribe. Both sides lost cats, and Deidara and the other double agents were ousted. Failing to take over the Tribe as he had wanted, Deidara vowed vengeance before leaving the Tribe permanently.
Deidara's days as Leader were dark for the Akatsuki Cats. Though he had started as a just ruler, there was a secret he was keeping that was changing him irreparably. During his moon long disappearance from the Tribe, while forming the Akatsuki, Deidara had reawakened the ancient power of the Shadow Flames within himself. However, it was more than he bargained for. With no proper training, and deep anger and bitterness coursing through him, he could not control the power, a strong ability fueled by anger. Slowly it took him over and weakened his body and his mind. Slowly but surely, Deidara began to go mad.
Deidara kept the Akatsuki Cats on the brink of starvation, believing this would keep them strong and desperate. No cat could hunt for any other, no cats could hunt together. Kits were on their own at 3 months, expected to feed themselves and defend themselves. Only the best of the best were allowed in the Akatsuki, that was the principle from the beginning, but as his madness took over Deidara took the concept too far. Barely anyone could live by the rules, and those who broke them fled or were killed. The Clan was terribly weakened, and it was in this weakened state that Deidara led another attack on the Tribe, trying to take lands along their border from them.
The attack was a major failure. Deidara was killed in the battle by MoonShadow and his own clanmate, Aiko, though in truth he was consumed by the Shadow Flames. The Akatsuki were decimated almost beyond repair. Miko took over as Leader, vowing revenge on the Tribe for Deidara's death. Deep bitterness and resentment was the lasting result of the battle. A buffer zone was set up between clan and tribe, and border disputes between the two remained a common occurrence for many suns.
Miko's rule was a tough but good time for the Clan. They grew to become strong in numbers. Miko kept Deidara's motto of 'Strength. Loyalty. Respect.' but scaled back a great deal of his unpopular rules. Cats could again hunt in groups and share food as they saw fit, but there was still no prey pile. Kits were not on their own at any age, but began training at 2 months and continued throughout their lives. All cats helped train and protect one another. Cats hunted and fought from 2 months until the day they died. There were no Elders in the Akatsuki Cat Clan. Towards the end of his rule Miko began to implement more lenient ways, such as communal living and the keeping of a prey pile during the cold and harsh LeafBare moons.
Though Miko spent much of his reign grooming his Clan to defeat the Tribe, towards the end they began to make peace, beginning with MoonFire's Leadership in the Tribe. This proved to be fortuitous, because it was a short while later that BloodClan rose to prominence in the Forest of Dreams and the Misted Mountains.
Many Akatsuki Cats were picked off by BloodClan before the War, and many more died during, leaving again only a handful of cats left to go on and rebuild. Miko's reign ended during the war, and the current Leader, Taiyou, took over than. It was just before the war began that Miko's young son, Raja, awakened the power of the Shadow Flames in himself. He, however, was able to control it, where Deidara had been unable. Because Tribe blood flows strongly in the Akatsuki, they too are able to control the Shadow Flames. With MoonCrescent's decision to keep the power outlawed amongst the Tribe Cats, the Akatsuki became and are now the only cats capable of using and controlling the ability.
With a scant few cats left in the Akatsuki, Taiyou is a young Leader with much riding on his shoulders. The Tribe has moved farther North and West of the Akatsuki, and Taiyou has taken over a bit of their old lands where possible. More isolated than any of the others, and closer to Two-Leg Place, the Akatsuki will be the first to know if and when BloodClan regain power. And they will be ready and waiting for them.
